Alder Court

Experimental 2026

A close representation of ordinary life in a tower block, not a Sims clone: income, rent, food, work, sleep, crowding and company drive each resident’s day, and those pressures are shown on every person.

The running simulation rendered frame by frame at its own speed, two simulated minutes a second, early on a Monday morning; the camera moves, nobody is steered.

What it does

Around seventy residents of every kind of household live in an eight-storey block. Nobody is scripted: each person chooses what to do next from their needs, obligations, habits, relationships and household money, and says why. The aim is fidelity to everyday life, not a game. A Society now panel counts homes in deficit, the income gap, overcrowding, stress, isolation and lost sleep, and a lens rings every resident by the chosen measure.

How it runs

  1. Pick a seed: households, jobs and budgets come from it
  2. Each resident scores their next action from needs, habits and money
  3. They walk planned routes, predicting everyone around them
  4. Workers and pupils leave in the morning and return in the evening
  5. Society now tracks deficits, crowding, stress, isolation and sleep
  6. Ring every resident by a measure, or follow anyone to read their reasons

How it works

A headless, seeded kernel runs the lives in one-minute ticks: flats, rooms and furniture, household budgets with rent and bills, and an off-site layer for work and school. The 3D view only reads it. Each walker predicts its neighbours and picks a collision-free velocity (reciprocal velocity obstacles); doors and narrow halls carry one direction at a time, lifts fill by slot and stairs keep lanes. Replaying the real frame loop on the same seeded morning, the previous renderer overlapped bodies in 120 frames and left people stuck 62 times; the new one has none, and that replay is now a test.

Skills shown

AI, agents & ML
Utility-based agents that score their next action from needs, obligations, habits and money, and record the reason.
Testing & QA
A headless replay of the browser frame loop holds the crowd to no overlaps and no one stuck, with the old renderer as a negative control.
Frontend, 3D & graphics
A three.js and WebGL cutaway tower with a live society lens, floor isolation, time control and follow-anyone.

Worth knowing

  • Decisions are scored from needs, obligations, habits, relationships and household money, and every choice carries its reason.
  • Society now shows the building’s pressures live; the lens paints them onto every resident.
  • Walkers predict each other and never walk into one another; doorways stay clear and lifts and stairs keep order.
  • The same seed replays the same lives, minute by minute, and residents are simulated off site at work or school.
